Railway Museum / Museu da Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro:
Like many railway museums in Brazil, the Jundiai Museu da Companhia Paulista is hidden from public sight. Visitors must blessed with great detective skills to discover its address and opening hours or to obtain directions to the museum, especially when local taxi drivers appear uncertain about where the museum actually is. The effort is well worth it however. This transport museum is in infact packed with creative ideas to promote community involvement and to develop ways of better displaying its treasures.
In 1872 the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro was the first railway company in Brazil not to rely on British entrepreneurial capital and, as such, played this nationalistic card to create bonds of loyalty amongst its work force and shareholders. Its network stretched to the west and north of the state of São Paulo, transporting coffee from the plantations to the coastal port of Santos. In 1922 it became the first Latin American network to run electric traction and was for much of its life one of the main passenger transport providers for people living within the state of São Paulo. The company was privatised in 1998 and what remains of the network today forms part of the Ferroban SA freight network.
