Federico Picchio appointed as Sales Director

PicchioxWeb

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Federico Picchio as the new Sales Director of Samputensili Cutting Tools, supporting customers and partners worldwide.

Federico, who holds a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bologna, has matured longstanding experience in the cutting tool industry, having worked at Samputensili for almost 20 years.

Deniz Sari, General Manager of Samputensili Cutting Tools, has declared: “Federico is the perfect candidate for the position as he’s extremely focused, committed and holds an exemplary track record of success in sales and business management.”

Federico has commented: “I am delighted of this opportunity to work in close co-operation with the global sales team of Samputensili Cutting Tools and Star SU to realize our aggressive growth plans for the European market.”

He went on adding: “My main priority will be to focus on gaining customer confidence through a more practical and reliable approach. At the same time, I will concentrate on increasing our market penetration thanks to a further development of the sales network. Last but not least, I will always push for innovation in each and every field, from internal processes to customer service passing through R&D. These are, of course, very demanding goals in a niche market like the gear cutting tool industry, but I am very much looking forward to this new challenge.”

Samputensili Master: the Feedback Interview

Master_Samputensili_Feedback

The first lesson of the Samputensili master basic course on the gears tooth machining took place at SAMP Group Headquarter in Bentivoglio, last week.

This new activity has been totally organized and promoted by Samputensili Cutting Tools and it is addressed to all Companies looking for some training solutions for those employees which are engaged daily in the design, production, and control of cylindrical gears, as well as in the purchase of the right gear cutting tools.

There have been many subscriptions to the initiative, including Samputensili’s long-standing customers and partners as for example the Bonfiglioli Group – a control and power transmission’s world leader – which provided three of its process engineers with the possibility to take part in the Samputensili Master Basic Course.

Master_Samputensili_Bonfiglioli

At the end of the training day, during which our Application Engineer Cosimo Caforio dealt with the main issues on the gears tooth machining allowing participants to see first-hand the different production process phases, we asked Raffaele, Massimo, and Alex – the Bonfiglioli representatives – to provide us with a feedback on the training experience lived during the day.

They unanimously stated the basic course is very useful both to deepen the gear’s fundamentals and its manufacturing basic methods and to keep up-to-date with the cylindrical gears tooth machining latest developments.

To confirm the course’s usefulness, the engineers have also underlined how the information acquired could be extremely profitable to carry out their daily working activities. As a matter of fact, a deeper production process knowledge can frequently minimize the risk of errors and bring to the design of meliorative solutions.

Minimizing errors and improving the manufacturing solutions are indeed the course aspects that have pushed some of the participants to sign up to other Samputensili Master modules such as the advanced course, the sectorial courses (about hobs, shaper and shaving cutters) and the application courses that totally aimed at identifying and solving production problems thanks to the right graphics interpretation.

We can, therefore, affirm with pleasure the Samputensili Cutting tools approach not to stop at the mere product’s sale but to support the customer through a shared growth path thanks to customized training and consultancies, has been positively embraced.

According to the words of Raffaele, Massimo and Alex, only the supplier, which manufactures the gear cutting tool, is fully aware of the technical specifications and potential of the product sold and this is exactly why his support is essential to allow the customer to take total advantage of the purchased gear cutting tool.

Samputensili at the Wear of Materials Conference 2019

Gear_Finish_Hobbing_2

During the Wear of Materials 2019 International Conference in Miami, FL, Samputensili Cutting Tools, together with the German RWTH Aachen University, published a scientific article about “Development of an Application-Oriented Tool Life Equation for Dry Gear Finish Hobbing”.

The full paper can be read HERE.

This article deals with the analysis of tool wear behavior in gear finish hobbing. Gear finish hobbing is a fine machining method for gears before heat treatment. The most common fine machining process for gears in soft conditions is the well-known gear shaving process. But with the improving technologies in hobbing machines as well as the hobbing tools the use of gear finish hobbing increases significantly. Thereby gear finish hobbing offers the opportunity to realize pre- and finishing processing with one machine at one clamping by the use of one tool. Furthermore, a complete dry process chain can be implemented by the combined use of low pressure carburizing and gas quenching as heat treatment. On account of the above-mentioned economic and ecological advantages, the use of gear finish hobbing is increasingly considered by the manufacturers of gears.

Gear finish hobbing for high-performance gears is mostly divided into two cuts, roughing and finishing.

While roughing process follows the state of art hobbing processes, finishing with hobbing in the gear industry has still a gap of knowledge regarding speeds and feeds. The results of this scientific paper are the analysis of different cutting materials to perform the finish hobbing of gears. For these investigations, tools made out of high-speed-steel, carbide as well as Cermet and CBN were used.

Gear_Finish_Hobbing_4

The results of the wear behavior were summarized in a tool life model, which allows the gear manufacturer to choose the best speeds and feeds for their applications.

The collaboration between RWTH Aachen University and Samputensili offers the possibility to investigate the hobbing processes at the level of today`s state of art and beyond. The cutting trials have been performed at cutting speeds up to 1,500 m/min, to find further potentials above today`s process limits. Samputensili is proud to be part of the scientific environment in gear cutting. With this knowledge, we will be able to support our customers in today`s and tomorrow`s gear cutting applications.
