On week 10th, 2018 Samputensili Cutting Tools organized a technical seminar in Pune, India.

Pune is known as one of India’s most important cities for automotive companies and their supplier. Especially a huge number of gear and transmission manufacturer are located there. Also, Samputensili has its facility directly in Pune city center to be close to our local customers. During that week the European management and our local Indian colleagues of Samputensili combined their forces to offer the Indian market a full day dedicated technology seminar. The group of attendants was composed by experts working for some of the most relevant powertrain companies in India, ranging from motorcycle through car to truck industries.

The seminar was focused on the full range of Samputensili’s manufacturing program showing all its aspects, advantages and technical facts. After a digression about Samputensili and its joint venture Star SU given by Teodoro Ceglia, General Manager Samputensili Cutting Tools, our Global Product Manager, Dr. Deniz Sari spoke about technical details, challenges and solutions for gear manufacturing processes. The presentation covered fundamentals, hobbing, shaping, shaving, chamfering and scudding of gears. Every chapter ends with an application example, which shows, that Samputensili is not just a tool supplier, furthermore Samputensili helps to set up new or improve existing production processes. Additionally, Dr. Deniz Sari introduced the audience in the newest tool innovations like the internal chamfering tool or a recently launched high-performance tool family.

During the full day, our customers had successful discussions with our experts from India and Europe. Many question were discussed during the seminar and our customer collected solutions and innovative ideas in their factories.

With their local facility Samputensili can offer the Indian market gear cutting tools with state of the art technology.

Star SU and Samputensili are looking forward to meeting customers and partners at the upcoming GrindTec Augsburg (March 14-17, 2018) in Hall 3, Stand 3100 to show the latest in advanced technology offerings, in an effort to make customers’ manufacturing more reliable, efficient and environmental friendly.

A wide selection of gear cutting tools, round tools, carbide blanks and preforms manufactured by the Italian company Samputensili and its American partner Star SU will be on show as the perfect complement for customers’ most demanding manufacturing tasks. What is the Archimedean spiral in a gear hob?

An important element of the gear hob design is the tip which represents a relief of the tooth profile and a part of the Archimedean spiral.

The Archimedean spiral is a curve traced out by a point moving in such a way that its movement towards or away from the center is uniform with the increase of its vectorially angle from the starting line. This curve is used  to ensure the continuity of the tooth profile during the resharpening.

For a resharpening with a zero-rake angle, the cutting profile lies on a plane that passes through the hob axis and the Archimedean spiral must ensure that the profiles that are on this perpendicular section are constant. This curve is used in the tooth profiles of the gear hob.

The characteristics of the Archimedean spiral are:

  • In Archimedes spiral, any ray passing through the origin does intersect successive turns of the spiral with a constant distance which is equal to 2 π Therefore, it is also named “arithmetic spiral”.
  • An Archimedes spiral, there are two arms – one arm for θ> 0 and another for θ < 0. These two arms are connected to the origin. One arm is shown in the graph. If we take the mirror image of this arm along Y axis, the other arm will be obtained.
  • Usually the term Archimedean spiral is used for more general spirals. The normal one occurs when in its equation, n = 1. Other spirals that fall into this group are the Fermat’s spiral and the hyperbolic spiral.
  • All the static spirals are logarithmic spirals in nature, except for Archimedes spiral.

 

Discovering all the parts and elements of gear hob

A gear hob is a gear cutting tool composed of different parts. The main parameter characterizing a gear hob is the module, which is the result of the division between the pitch gear diameter and the number of the teeth.

Another element of the hob is the pressure angle which coincides with the nominal pressure angle of the gear. The normal pressure angle αn – measured on a section perpendicular to the direction of the thread – and the axial pressure angle αt – measured on an axial section of the hob – are easily distinguished.

Besides, helix angle β, also called thread angle, is measured on the pitch diameter of the hob depending on this value and the number of starts. The angle is direct proportional to the diameter, pitch, module and number of threads. So, when this increase also the other parameters increase consequently. It is important to highlight that the helix direction of the hob is chosen in agreement with the helix direction of the gear.

Gashes are another fundamental geometrical element of a gear hob. These are serrations that cut the threads either in an axial or in a perpendicular direction. The number of gashes should be chosen during the design phase on the basis of many factors, including final quality and working conditions. They depend on the hob diameter and on the number of starts. The current tendency is to design hobs with a larger number of gashes due to the fact that the hobbing time is reduced and the feed speed is higher. Moreover, the gash determines the cutting face by intersecting the thread. The cutting face is radial in the majority of cases. In any case, to realize a positive or negative rake angle, the hob must be reshaped with a grinding wheel positioned out of axis by a distance that depends on the rake angle itself and on the hob diameter.

There are also other important gash’s elements which influence the cutting efficiency of the tool, just like:

  • the tooth back angle;
  • the bottom radius of the gash;
  • the gash depth.

These are just some of the most important elements of a gear hob, to know the others read the news.

“For the past four weeks i had the unique occasion to work at Samputensili thanks to the “Young apprenticeship programme” (alternanza scuola lavoro) supported by my school, Istituto Salesiani. This experience marked my access to the business world since it was my first time in the real working life, where I had the chance to see all I learned at school. Indeed, working for and with a big group like SAMP is not like going to school. In fact, at school you just study hard in order to get nice marks and most of the time you are doing it individually. Instead at SAMP I have always worked within teams. This is a completely different approach for me and I liked it. In particular, I appreciated the fact that in this way everybody is responsible for our common goal: client’s satisfaction.

I felt welcomed by everybody, from my tutors to workers, who were friendly and keen to teach me the secrets of the job. I have carried out calculation activities as well as more practical activities related to the assembly and adjustment.

Furthermore, I have noticed that SAMP is particularly focused on safety and its related norms. Indeed, during my internship, I attended a course on security and safety and one on the bearing assembly. Both were extremely interesting.

Now, I have to decide if I will continue my studies in the engineering area or start to work immediately. In both cases, I would like to work in the SAMP Group”.

New gear technology manager Deniz Sari

We are proud to announce the recent appointment of Dr. Ing. Deniz Sari to the newly created position of Gear Technology Manager for Samputensili and its joint-venture Star SU. A talented leader and industry expert, Deniz brings significant experience, knowledge and passion for gears to the business.

Born in Aachen, Germany, the 31-year-old holds a Diploma Degree and a Doctoral Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the RWTH Aachen University. After his study, he has worked first as a researcher, then as the Leader of the Gear Manufacturing Group of the WZL of RWTH Aachen University.

In his new role of Gear Technology Manager, Deniz will analyze all best practices coming from Samputensili and Star SU manufacturing plants around the world, combine them and optimize all production processes from design to shipping, not only from a technical, but also from an organizational point of view. In this sense, he will be responsible for supporting the international sales structure by developing solutions, systems and synergies across the company, and helping to establish seamless consumer experiences worldwide.

“As our organization continues to expand and evolve worldwide, talented professionals like Deniz help us grow and strengthen our position on the market,” said Teodoro Ceglia, General Manager of Samputensili Cutting Tools. “In particular, Deniz’s extensive experience with production processes, technological solutions and industry experts will make our training programs stronger and more valuable for our customers who attend.”
